Thanks for the clarification, Porphyrins!

I had meant that out of the bird world, only owls had them in their feathers. Is that correct? Meanwhile, I may go see where else in nature these occur.

Any suggestions as to good sites, let me know.

I just wanted to comment quickly and clarify that porphyrins are not only found in owls feathers. We all use them every day to make heme and plants use them every day to make chlorophyll. They are fascinating little molecules!

Thank you. But the birds and other critters are the ones who have enriched my life. I think all of us bird-bloggers and bird lovers can't imagine our world without them.

I'm glad you enjoyed this post, Larry. I also think you'll be happy with a little owl as a new family member. And I also appreciate the suggestion on the "adopt an owl" link. I will add that into my post.

Beth I don't know how to thank you for bringing the awareness of the Saw-whet Owl to the public with your super post on this beautiful little raptor. (Oh yes I do, I will adopt an owl!)

The photographs and information are exceptional and reading this was the highlight of my day. Just to help out and be more specific, the direct link to adopt an owl is here.
