		<description>Yes, these were Common Mergansers. Good guess. I, too, think that maybe that bear had to be aware of us but it was so good at being nonchalant that I couldn't be sure. Glad you're enjoying the blog. It will give me a good place to put some pre-digiscoping photos of birds and other critters. 

It's just thinking of something to say with the photos that doesn't sound dorky is sometimes hard.

		<description>Wonderful!  And I think the birds were mergansers -- common if I had to venture I guess.  Was I close?  And I'd bet you a big fat chunk of money the bear knew you were there long before you had any clue about him/her.  One of their favorite ways of avoiding confrontation is to play "I don't see you, I don't you, so you're not real" (as I type this there is a four-year-old's sing-songy voice in my head).
